Philippa Bentley
Painter & Print Maker with Augmented Reality Art
Philippa’s beautiful work is inspired by nature, often with a twist, & has been described as “highly unusual & utterly delightful”.
Growing up with a large rambling garden, Philippa has always loved being outdoors & was fascinated with insects from a young age. She loves the idea of retaining a sense of wonder in the world & her careful observations of the natural world are reflected in her detailed drawings & prints.
Philippa spends much time on & near the water & is currently working with sea charts, boats & calm, soaring seabirds in both paint & print, to reflect our changing relationship with the natural world. Philippa’s work is incredibly engaging & has an interactive element with the use of augmented reality (AR) which quite literally brings some of her works to life.
Living in Auckland, Philippa has been working professionally as an artist for about fifteen years. She has won awards in painting, printmaking & design, as well as being a finalist in a number of national & international awards. Philippa recently celebrated a very successful solo exhibition here at Turua Gallery, showcasing her multi-disciplinary practice with a stunning range of works in different media on display.
Philippa’s work is held in national & international collections & she is available for commissions through the gallery.
At Home
With my 'human landform' paintings I am placing human figures, presented as islands, on a marine chart alongside the familiar islands of the Hauraki Gulf - our much loved Rangitoto, Browns Island, Waiheke- to convey a sense of place and the interconnectedness of things (something this year has made us very aware of, I think). We are an integral part of nature, our environment, the map. A shifted world view, to navigate a new and positive way forward.
