Helen Dean

Painter

When viewing Helen’s paintings it is hard to believe that after completing her Fine Art Degree in 1995, Helen lost confidence in painting & stopped for many years. We are so thrilled she picked up a brush again & fell in love with the process.

Helen says she is continually learning about colour, form & how paint works & it’s this that keeps her excited about the painting process. Setting out with the intention to explore something specific, she often relies on intuition as the painting develops, liking the freedom to respond to happy accidents. Helen finds herself trying to create paintings that have a balance between soft, organic shapes & more geometric or controlled elements.

Painting using different sizes of brushstrokes, different thicknesses of paint, Helen's paintings contain many layers before they’re finished , giving you a glimpse of what’s underneath. We think you’ll agree the results are beautiful.

Originally from England, New Zealand has been home since 2003. Helen lives in West Auckland with her Kiwi partner & their 8 year old daughter, juggling painting & working part time for a non- profit organisation teaching refugees & migrants.

Helen is available for commissions through the gallery.
