Dominique, a Waikato based artist whose focus is on life drawing. She paints directly from a nude model, who typically poses for short periods, ranging from 1 - 5 minutes for each pose. We adore the energy of Dominique's works and the beauty & movement of her clear, strong mark making. 

Her central influence comes from Zen and traditional Japanese art forms, integrating Eastern philosophy with her Western background in figure painting. Dominique is inspired by the dynamic energy of Japanese calligraphy brushwork, and she studies under Grand Master Akiko Crowther. This influence can be seen in her work, which is painted with traditional calligraphy brushes and sumi ink. 

Dominique is working at a rapid pace, with an unpredictable medium, so her process has become very instinctive, embracing spontaneity, rhythm, chance and mistakes. These sessions are followed by a rigorous selection process, where only a few pieces are chosen from many. Her energetic process led to a performance-based exhibition where she painted live in front of an audience with one of her nude models.  

Dominique has been working as an artist since completing her Visual Arts degree at Unitec in Auckland in 2015. Born in Australia, Dominique moved to Auckland in 2005. After finishing her degree, she moved with her partner, Tim, to a rural lifestyle property near Raglan. She dabbles in ceramics and jewellery making, and teaches private life drawing lessons on the side.
