Establishing himself as an artist has not been a straight forward path for Dean Wallace. As a young boy growing up in Hawkes Bay, Dean always painted & drew, but his career path as an adult saw him briefly heading in other directions before studying a Bachelor of Graphic Design. But painting has always been there & his love of still life has seen him paint everyday & nostalgic objects in a way that captures the viewers’ hearts. 

While Dean’s background has been as the Creative Director of the design agency he has had with his wife, Melissa, for over 20 years, a recent lifestyle change saw them start Turua Gallery & The Framer. This also meant more time to paint, thankfully.

Dean has always appreciated texture & this is evident in many of his works that feature brown paper, corrugated iron & glass. Recently, Dean has painted a fruit series & he has also started the ‘Sunday Flowers’ series - stunning painterly depictions of hydrangea bushes. The series referring to his Sunday afternoon visits as a child to his grandmother’s home that always had large bushes of hydrangeas.
