Events

Each year we bring you exhibitions that showcase some of our wonderful artists & their stunning work.

We host an opening night for each show where everyone is welcome & this is the perfect way to meet the artist & preview the exhibition. Openings are held on Friday nights, which we think is the perfect way to end the week & welcome in the weekend.

If you’d like to view pieces that were part of a previous exhibition, simply click the details button & you can view the show sheet. Works that may still be available can be found on their artist page.

Aliveness - We Are Nature

John Allen

31st July - 14th August 2020

Opening night from 5pm Friday 31st July 2020

This marks John's second exhibition here at Turua Gallery following his successful solo show in August 2019 ‘New Beginnings’ & brings to you his signature pieces that showcase his stunning skill combining form and function. John’s pieces are all crafted from fallen & found native woods, to be treasured for generations. Working with the natural form of a branch or root, he pars back the wood to highlight the fundamental form that already exists - less is more - giving each piece a second life & allowing its story to unfold.

John’s pieces are supported by the works of Jane Puckey & Maria Napier.

‘Rhythm’ is Carmel Van Der Hoeven's first Auckland solo exhibition. She has used the simple act of marking canvas with painted brush strokes, which helps to convey a sense of time & movement. Ultramarine

Philippa Bentley

14th February - 28th February 2020

Opening night from 5pm Friday 14th February 2020

Philippa Bentley’s solo exhibition ‘Ultramarine’ refers to both ‘ultramarine blue’, a paint colour used extensively in her paintings, & the focus on the sea. The sea is the link. You can expect to be treated to both Philippa's paintings & Paper Boats, in which some of them incorporates augmented reality (AR).

JOHN OPENING e.jpg

New Beginnings

John Allen

2nd August - 23rd August 2019

Opening night from 5pm Friday 2nd August 2019

Through his sculpture work John has been starting to see the world differently. Part of the difficulty of learning to focus on the wholeness & life around us is heightened awareness of the state of the world. It’s easy to get stuck in negativity & battling things not working, but John is not buying into the doom & gloom any more.

The way forward is connecting inside, feeling & living the wholeness already present in the core of our beings – being the change we want to see, & reminding us of our part in the world. John’s current work taps into old forms as a link to our deeper being & includes pieces crafted from woods such as Puriri, Pohutakawa & Kauri, using fallen trees, driftwood & reclaimed wood.

[PHOTO] Synthesis

Tim Corbett

7th June - 28th June 2019

Opening night from 5pm Friday 7th June 2019

[Photo] Synthesis, is curated upon Tim's recent award winning work & is presented in large format, archival prints to encourage viewers to slow down, absorb & connect. They are inspired by the fine line pencil & watercolour drawings early botanists made to record the intricate structure & beauty found in flora, capturing them for both research & to communicate through art.

Lotus Lilies, the subject of this series, have been used throughout history & across cultures to symbolise purity, peace, harmony & grace. Their growth pattern of rising up from the mud before flowering is used to represent our own struggles to detach & rise above our struggles, so we too can find harmony & peace.

All these images are taken ‘in situ’ with natural light, no studio lighting, artificial light or image manipulation. As such, these images can never be repeated or replicated, they are, as nature presented them, on this particular day, in February, 2019.
